After a loss
We are so sorry for your loss. This can be an overwhelming time.
The Community Hevra Kadisha of Rhode Island is committed to providing the sacred and compassionate service of Tahara—the ritual preparation of the deceased for burial in accordance with Jewish tradition—at no charge to families.
This can be an overwhelming time, here is a place to begin:
Step 1 - Reach out to the funeral home.
There are two funeral homes that serve the Jewish community of Rhode Island:
Shalom Memorial Chapel 1100 New London Ave, Cranston, RI 02920. (401) 463-7771.
Sugarman Sinai Memorial Chapel 458 Hope St, Providence, RI 02906. (401) 331-8094.
Step 2 - If your loved one has left instructions or their final wishes, have these available when you discuss arrangements with the funeral home. The funeral home will let you know what additional information they will need.
Step 3 - There are two options for Tahara in RI. You may ask the funeral home for more information, read more about your options on our FAQ page, or reach out to us at CommunityHevraRI@gmail.com with any questions. If you would like The Community Hevra Kadisha of RI, please let the funeral director know this. They will reach out to us directly to make all the arrangements based on your wishes.
Step 4 - If your loved one wore a tallit, they can be buried in one. If you would like us to use the one that they wore in life, please supply it to the funeral home.
זיכרונם לברכה
May their memories be for blessing.
Planning for a loss
Some Jews may wish to make arrangements for themselves or for a loved one ahead of death. If you already know which funeral home will be used, you may consider contacting them directly to discuss pre-planning. You may choose to make selections and payments in advance, or simply to discuss options and/or record your wishes and preferences.
We also suggest writing a letter that details your final wishes, and giving it to your family, funeral home, rabbi, and lawyer. Your next-of-kin will be comforted to know that they are following your wishes.
